Questions about RAID 1

Okay, I'm going to do a RAID 1 on my comp. I have 2 parts questions:

1) How will my comp see the two drives, one as C and the other as D, or just both as drive C?

2) If one drive fails, then I will boot off the good drive. How do I go about setting up a new drive so my RAID 1 would be back functioning again. Would the RAID software take care of that, or do I have to do something manually?
