Questions about Radar Detectors?? I need one!

I am going to buy a radar detector on Ebay, and I have already decided that I am going to buy an Escort. So, my questions are: Should I get the cordless one (Escort Solo RD5110) or a Passport 7500? The 7500 is going to be about 50 bucks more. My problem is that I only have one cig lighter, and my cell phone takes that up, but, I have power going to my rearview mirror, and I was wondering if i could tap into that power to power the detector? What do ya'll think???

yeah you can tap into that power for the radar detector... I use to tap into the overhead map lights to power my radar detector...

I would personally get the cordless... Most detectors are the same for normal driving anyways... but I dont like wires going everywhere in the car...

What does it look like?

BCYL - Did you just open up the cig lighter cord, and splice the wires??? This would be optimal!

Radar tells you that you are being hit by radar, which means the cop already has your speed.

Save your money. Falce security just causes more tickets.

No, I didnt wanna destroy the cig lighter cord...

I just took the radar to RadioShack, and found a power plug that fits the radar detector (costs less than $1)... Then bought some normal electrical wires and connect them to the plug... Only takes a couple of mins and cost a couple of bucks... the cig lighter cord is more expensive than that...

Yeah unless you're about 1/4 mile behind somebody else and they get nailed, or the trap is just on always-on, or the highway is crowded and yor detector pulls up the radar much earlier 🙂

The point though is to catch the stray radar waves which are the result of the cop gunning people in front of you.

It would help if the cop was aiming his radar gun at another car ahead of you... But you're right, if you are the only car on the road then you are screwed anyways...

And cops dont usually give out warnings if they see you have a radar detector 🙂

First, detectors are only useful if you understand, A, what it is telling you, and B, how speed radar and lidar works, and how the police use it. Study up on it.

Second, going cordless reduces performance and range over the corded model. Do you want that? I wouldn't.

Third, I would only buy the best, and the best is Valentine One. It gives you the most useful information of them all. Even a few cops show a little respect for that one. Ask my friend who was pulled over with a V1, though not for speeding. A cop saw it and actually complimented him on his choice. It's only $400, worth it, IMHO (and I'm a frugal MF!), if you're serious about getting any detector. My second choice, if I wanted maximum value, or just wanted a detector to learn on, would not be a $250-300 Escort, but a $100 BEL.

What he said.

Have one for 4 years - paid for itself many many times over. Will admit to enjoying speed. But must use it intelligently and understand the limitations of radar.

BTW don't go by what radartest.com says. That is a biased site.

edit:
It comes with a kit to tap into any power available at the roof.

Make sure to get an older model, though.

Buy a used one... the law made the batch after X-MAS less sensitive.
