Questions about PPP Protocol error in Windows 2000

A friend of my dad's just had Beast Buy wipe his hard drive on his old Dell laptop because of malware issues. He recently got the laptop back and he's now having problems hooking up to his dial up ISP. He keeps getting a PPP Protocal error and it won't let him connect. Does anyone have any idea what could've happened during the fresh installation of Windows 2000? I have no idea what to tell him over the phone. Is it a configuration issue? Any ideas on what to check?

Do you think that he's getting this error because of a driver issue with the modem? It doesn't make sense that his internet worked before the reinstall and doesn't work after.

You are getting way back there with modem connection questions. I'm FAR from being a modem expert nowadays.

It certainly wouldn't hurt to hit Dell's site, look up his particular laptop, and download and install the latest Dell drivers for the modem (assuming it came from Dell). There may also be firmware updates for the modem.

that could be the problem
The internet connection was working fine, but the OS was FUBARED because he doesn't believe in keeping his virus definitions up to date or do any other maintenance for that matter. He then had the bright idea of taking it to Beast Buy to have the drive wiped and have Win2K reinstalled. The only rub was that he didn't have any of the original software or drivers for the laptop for some reason. I don't even know how BB reinstalled the OS legally if he didn't have any software?

Since Beastly Buy reinstalled the OS, his dial up isn't working. He took it back to them and they said that it was nothing that they did (of course). They told him that his laptop was too old. Whatever that means. These guys should have their knuckles rapped.

Get this.. He paid Worst Buy $200 to do this and they didn't save one file for him. They probably told him that they weren't responsible for any of his backups. He ended up losing his emails because he didn't know how to back them up. Also, his cd rom isn't working, so he now has to carry around an external drive. Now he can't use the internet with it either. The thing sounds like a paper weight to me. I told my dad to tell him to get a new laptop since they are pretty damn cheap these days. Even the most bargain basement laptop would be a ton better. It goes in one ear and out the other of course.

I wish that I had the laptop in front of me. It would be much easier for me to figure out, especially since it has to do with a dial up internet connection. Like you guys, I don't remember sh*t about dial up at this point. The only thing that I can think of is a driver issue.

The thing is that I don't like the guy and I'm only offering suggestions as favor to my dad. He had a similar problem a couple of years ago with a Dell 333 desktop (which he was still using until recently when it got screwed up again). A couple of years ago, I backed up his files, wiped his drive and reinstalled Win98 for him. I screwed up though and only saved half of his emails (the older ones). Apparently, he had two stores for the emails because he had upgraded from Win95 at one point and I didn't catch it because I wasn't looking at his emails. Anyway.. Because I lost half of his emails, he gave me a minor as* chewing which I didn't deserve because I did all of this work for the whopping price of $0 and spent a big chunk of my weekend doing it. To top it off, I dropped everything to do it. Most of the computer repair shops that he was dealing with wouldn't touch it without a couple weeks lead time. That's why he took it to Best Buy in the first place.

He now has the same issue again with his ancient Dell 333 desktop and was going to have Average Buy work on that too. I told my dad to tell him that it's a paper weight at this point and not to put another dime into it. Of course, I could throw a system together for him with throwaway parts for under $50, but why should I?

One last thing. He's in no hurry to do anything at the moment because one of his kids is home from college for the summer and he's using his pc. The tragic thing is that this pc is acting up now. Probably because of more malware.

Sounds like the connection to his isp wasnt setup again hence the ppp error.

get him to ring the isp who should talk him through the setup.
the modem is working, as for the cdrom that should just work if an external one does.

sounds like beaty buy at complete useless gits to me

That's a good idea. I'll tell him to call tech support for his ISP. Even if it's not the ISP, they may be able to help him diagnose the problem.

It's been so long since I called tech support, that I forgot that there was such a thing as tech support. 😉

It's impossible for me to figure out the problem without talking to the guy. The medium that I'm using (my father) is almost as clueless as he is, so there's a huge communication breakdown.
