questions about our new wide screen projection tv, and hdtv

my dad just bought a wide screen projection tv for $3k. i know its not hdtv but the guys that sold it to him said that there is, or will be a convertor to attach to your tv so that it will be high definition. is this true?? also, when will the signals become high definition?? 2 years from now?? 3?? so that means if you have a non high definition tv, you will not be able to view any channels??

also, do you think its overpriced since its not hdtv?

Sounds like it is HDTV ready, meaning that to get broadcast HDTV, he needs a special reciever. Now if you have a cable provider that offers HDTV, they have a converter box which outputs HDTV signals. You can watch regular TV too. Satellite is the same. You can get a HDTV box and watch it without that special receiver.

What model is it?

I know Mitsubishi has a HD-Upgrade module for their TVs, but it costs $1000 which is a ripoff.

Just got to Best Buy or CC and get a Samsung set-top HD-Tuner. Runs about $350, has excellent reception, and you'll get all your local HD channels for free.

If you guys have DirecTV or DISH, you can also get their HD packages with HBO and Showtime in HD, they have their own satellite HD recievers.

oh sweet. i assumed there was no thing as a hdtv receiver to convert your tv to hdtv.

It won't convert your TV to HDTV, but it does feed it a HD signal that it understands and can display.

For those HD receivers to work, be it a HD digital cable box or a HD satellite receiver, you need a TV capable of interpreting and displaying a HD signal. It won't work on your regular TV.

My recommendation would be to invest in a DirectTV HD satellite receiver, as they have the widest variety of HD programming.

its either one of these 4. i assume the difference is just size since they all use the same manual

sony
kp-57wv600
kp-57wv700
kp-65wv600
kp-65wv700

and we just have basic cable

Where are you located?

I'm in Northern NJ and Time Warner offers HDTV cable boxes for the same price as regular cable. I just got upgraded to HDTV. There really isn't much on maybe 7 channels. The best is PBS.

BTW: He should have gotten the Hitachi SWX series for cheaper.

Well if he got the 65" model, he got a good deal. 57", he may have paid more than he needed to. But Sony's are generally great TVs, very user friendly, very good picture out of the box.

Give us a location, chances are that if you live in a big city you can get hdtv now Off the Airwaves.
