Questions about news readers

Is it normal for a news reader to slow down the OS when trying to pull down a lot of headers? Or is it that I'm just using a crappy news reader? (Grabit)

Check Task Manager and see if it's using tons of CPU or RAM. They tend to load tons of info into memory.

Yep you're right, its sucking up tons of memory. Is there a way to prevent that or are there any news readers that can handle lots of headers without hogging memory?

You can easily pull down several hundred thousand of headers when refreshing a large newsgroup. The only option pull limit how many headers you pull down or purge/refresh the groups more frequently.

I don't notice any significant drain when I'm running xnews.

2.2 GHz and 1 gig of ram.

if you want an easy to use newsreader like grabit, i suggest newsleecher. Xnews is good too though.

But some do tend to go heavy on the CPU/RAM

I <3 GrabIt. It's free.

Yes, it does take up a bit of CPU usage when fetching headers or downloading binaries, but it's my favorite news reader 🙂

i to find Grabit and excellent binary grabber. but it eats up wayyy to much memory.

I always have problems(aka: doesnt work) when updating a group with a large amount of headers.

Im tring out Power-Grab 2002 it seems pretty good so far.

on a 4.5 million header groups Grabit would eatup around 900MBs of memory, Powergrab maxed out at 80mb.

What provider are you using to have a group with 4.5 million headers??? I use UsenetServer and they have like 3 weeks retention. On a.b.dvdr, there are only like 3 million headers. 4.5 million headers would potentially mean 4-5 weeks retention :Q

I use newsleecher and it never seems to use more than 50MB of RAM. But instead of downloading headers, I'd suggest using .nzb files, they're awesome! I usually get them from www.newzbin.com saves tons of time and easier/fast to get TV episodes this way than with P2P programs like edonkey.
