Good day fellas,
I plan on building my home NAS server, it'll mostly be for storage and some streaming. I am gonna go with NAS4Free and ZFS RaidZ configuration.
I already purchased 3x 3TB WD RED.
My questions are regarding hardware configurations.
For now I'm going to be using spare parts I have laying around to build the case internals, eventually I'm going to be upgrading the hardware.
The questions I have are about the hardware and performance.
1) With Nas4Free booting from USB if I decide to upgrade the board/ram/CPU would it affect my RaidZ config? or would it be as simple as shutting down the server, swap the hard drives to the new config and boot from USB?
2) For 99% of the time there won't be more than 1 client connected for streaming. When streaming videos to clients (Windows/Android Phone/Android Tablet) through XBMC is the server only affected with reads or does it also do video decoding? What I'm asking basically is is the server affected by what you stream or how many clients are connected to it (the videos that would be streamed are 480p DVD's, 720p HD videos and 1080p videos (albeit rarely)?
Reason I ask is for now i'll be running an old P4 (Single Core) with 8GB RAM for ZFS. I'm wondering if there would even be a need to upgrade the hardware or if that would be sufficient for my basic needs.
If the server will only send the file to the client and all decoding is done on the client side then i'm guessing that should be sufficient, if on the other hand the NAS box is the one that would be doing the decoding then for sure the P4 won't be enough.
How slow it performs in terms of read/write is not an issue for me as it's mostly going to be used for storage, but I know will be doing some light streaming every now and then.
If I would require a faster processor, what would you recommend keeping in mind that my needs above and considering I want to keep cost as low as possible.
If anything I said is not clear, please ask and i'll clarify,
Thank you for your time,
Khar00f
