I was messing around with my visiontek gts card using powerstrip and testing it with counterstrike and i found some things i wanted to know about.

1st thing was using PS there are some options that are unchecked such as

"Enable vertical sync"
"use linear mipmap filtering"
"use anisotripic filtering"

well without having any of these checked in counterstike my FPS is 99 and and move very little in the game but the graphics is more blocky and sometime its little jumpy.

When i check and enable
"Enable vertical sync"

my FPS sits at like 60 and FPS display flickers very fast jumping from 60 to 70 (i notice no dif at all though) but it looks just as fast as before and the QUALITY is far better.

So what i was wondering is what is "vertical sync" and why does CS show my fps dropping,
is my FPS really 99 without it and why is the graphic quality not as good?

thx.:)

Yes, you're FPS is really 99 w/o vertical sync. Turning it on limits your fps to your monitor's refresh rate (60hz). It'll look better because when your video is timing each frame with a monitor refresh, you won't get many of the artifacts.

Tip - change your monitor refresh rate to 85Hz - and save your eyesight ;)

A Refresh rate of 60Hz drives me nuts - it's like looking at a stroboscope! Try tooking to the side of your monitor - view it with your peripheral vison - you'll see exactly what I mean

Then you can play at 85fps in Counterstike also ;) and you won't get as much eyestrain when using 2D applications either

Hehe - it's funny though because some people just don't even think about it - when I see colleagues/friends PC with 60Hz settings - i just HAVE to adjust it for them....hehe :D

yay thx gtd made the change to 75 and now 85hz. i notice dif with my desktop for some strange reason though the game is still shoing 60fps
in 1024 mode and even in 860 mode. I know it can do better with vertical sync enabled now that refrsh rate is at 85hz but it not letting me.!!

Actually I would take the vertical sync off personally.

I am assuming that you changed the max frame rate from fps_max = 72.0 to fps_max = 100.00 in the console?

Even my "lowly" GF 2 MX would get upto 99/100 fps at max resolution.

I generally set refresh rate to 85Hz and leave vertical sync off ;)
