Well i have a little bit of a dated rig but i play at 1280x720 on a 32inch lcd hdtv. i play cod 4 multiplayer and it runs just fine with all settings max except aa/af i get at least 45 fps in all online games. its normally around 60 and max of 90fps.

i bought fallout 3 goty edition on pc from walmart new for $29.99 since it was so darn cheap. how do you think my rig in sig will run these games at 1280x720

fallout 3 goty- i already have it but havent opened it yet scared it will run like butt and may take it back
cod mw2
grid
dirt 2
battlefield bad company 2

i think it will run all of them fine at my low res with high settings and no aa/af except for bc2. I just wonder what you guys think about it

If your cpu is overclocked you should be able to get somewhat playable framerates out of those games if you spend a little money on a new GPU.

8800GS? I haven't heard of that. Do you mean 8800GT or 8800GTS?

You're 6850 is faster than my AMD X2 ~5600. If you do have a 8800GT, then it's a bit slower than my 4870. I haven't played all of those games but I agree with your guess that they will run fine at 1280x720 at high settings, with BC2 being the biggest possibility.

I run games like MW2 at 1680x1050 at med to high settings which is almost 50% more pixels to draw than your resolution. Given your rig is only a bit slower overall than mine, I think you would easily run those games, probably BC2 easily as well.

FIgure my video card is 3 years old and it plays cod4 just fine still. SO maybe if i buy a q9550 for $179 new oc it to 3.6ghz or higher that cpu will last me a few years. I cannot afford to go to s1366 or even s1156 with a new mobo cpu and ram thats way too much for me right now. A fast C2Q is more in my price range.

Do you think if I buy a Q9550 oc it to 3.6 or more and spend $200 on a modern video card that it will last a few years before i need to upgrade again? I have no plans on changing my display so my res is gonna be super low.

Id hate to go with a console becasue at the same time I know in a few years we will have a new console and its gonna cost $500-$600 again. It may be honestly cheaper to buy the q9550 and video card now. I see games are using quads more now and its clear in BC2

It would be so much easier to buy a 360 right now and not worry about my pc hardware but at the same time I could spend $200 on the console and in 2 years a new one comes out and its $500 and then I have to upgrade again anyways. WHy does gaming have to be so darn complicated lol

I think you'll be fine at 12x7 with an 8800gs. I was running CoD4 at 19x12 or 16x10 medium high with my 9600GSO and an E4300. You should be able to run those games at high or medium high settings.

Your CPU is less of a bottleneck than the GPU in my opinion. If you upgrade anything it should be the video card. You could drop $160 on a 5770 and be good to go.

I dont need anything huge and expensive Id figure a modern $150 video card would be a huge increase in frame rate

I cant afford a whole new socket change, id love to go 1156 quad but I cant afford it. I would imagine a Q9550 would last me at least a few years as games are starting to use quads now. I dont know how the architecture is used, i think a quad is a quad, as long as you have 4 cores and good clock speed i would be ok but im sure its alot deeper then that lol

If i cant do a decent price upgrade im just gonna buy a console

The 5770 is the best bang for your buck at the moment, unless another ridiculous deal comes along like a GTS 250 for $50-60, but that's not likely. And it's already a generation beyond what's in the PS3 and 360 as far as the GPU goes.

It just depends on the type of games you prefer to play. For shooters, a new video card is probably your best bet. If you like the action adventure genre though, there are a lot of games you can only get on consoles, and then you can still get most of the PC side too.

I've been a PS3 guy lately, because I just don't like Modern Warfare or Bad Company. Personally I have more fun with Uncharted 2, and I like hack n slash games a lot. If MW2 and BFBC2 were my types of games though, I'd definitely stick with PC.

i love sports games with out a console tho I have no football but I have the others like basketball on pc still.
Do you think i should just nab a Q9550 next week? I can run some of my own benchmarks now and then compare them to the Q9550 when i get it. run the same res settings but with just a different cpu and that would let me know whats going on.

I found a good article on tech power up about fallout 3 and comparing all the video cards at 14x9 and there wasnt a huge difference between them and my res is even lower then that. Id be a little pissed off if I spent $150 on a new video card and didnt see a big improvement. I think i woulf get a better improvement buying the Q9550 then a gpu, call me crazy or stupid but at 12x7 im not pushing the graphics hard at all and i dont even use aa/af at all.
