Questions about my HD 7850OC

Hey guys.. I just recently built my first computer from scratch and used a SAPPHIRE RADEON HD 7850OC in it. You can see the rest of the parts in my signature..

I started playing BF3 on a 1600x1200 VGA input 32" LCD monitor. I put all of the settings on Ultra with everything maxxed out and I noticed that I am only getting about 45 FPS.

Is this about what I should expect with this GPU without OC'ing it? Are there any settings I can change to help boost me to 55-60 FPS? I COULD change it to HIGH settings but I'd rather play on Ultra, that's why I built this computer in the first place, so I could move from Low to Ultra.

Thanks for your help ahead of time everyone!

PS. I'm using the 12.4 driver update, and I haven't messed with any of the controls in the CCC. Thanks everyone!
PSS. Should I DL the 12.6 BETA? Has anyone tried this out yet?

i thought 12.6 was the BETA that was out right now? are they stable? i won't have to revert to 12.4?

Why is this CPU Multiplier business, how do I do this? Is this OC'ing?

Go into the options and drop MSAA from 4X to 2X. Also up your cpu multiplier to 40X

Also download 12.7 beta's

http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=2933

Lastly download asus tweak and overclock your GPU alittle. That will help with FPS

I'd run the beta's as Don points out, all the fixes so far from 12.4 have been relatively big ones for the 7xxx series.

I would start with just setting the Overdrive core clock all the way to the right within the provided Catalyst Control Center. How far will it go up with that particular card?

High Performance GPU Clock Settings

300 - 1050 (im at 920)

High Performance Memory Clock Settings

150 - 1450 (im at 1250)

What should I do here?

Also, 12.7 isn't on the AMD website, only 12.6 Beta is? What's the deal with that?

I'd try 1050 and see what that does for you before wading into voltage tweaks and the like. I would focus on the core clock for now.

Since so many here seem to be running 12.7 without issue (indeed, with many fewer issues than 12.4) I'd go ahead and run those. Looks like they are not "officially" released to beta yet, which is kind of funny :)

After updating the drivers, follow these directions:
http://www.guru3d.com/article/amd-radeon-hd-7850-and-7870-review/23

They look very good, except for the "what do we need" part - you don't need afterburner.

Then think about how much time you want to spend tweaking, and how much time you want to spend playing. As Don pointed out, AA costs a lot of performance. If you want really good framerates, I'd consider disabling it completely and seeing how much you miss it. With AA out of the picture, your frames should be good and then you can just getting to the playing part. Aren't there some badges you want to earn? :p

When I was running a 3870 I got used to disabling AA in all games and just maxing details and AF - it worked really well. As a side bonus, I now don't get as disgruntled when I need to turn down the AA with my 5870 - this saves me a lot of money :p

Also, after you turn down AA (or turn it off) to get acceptable framerates, you can try morphological AA and see if it looks good, as a way to recapture some of the nice look. It's very low resources to run, and some games look very nice, but others not so much. I remember in Starcraft 2 I used it and it was almost as good as regular MSAA x4 with much higher framerates due to the low GPU burden, but the menus looked messed up a bit.

Anyway my point is that even if you completely turn off MSAA, you can recapture some of the smoothness by using morphological AA (it has it's own checkbox in the catalyst control center).

Sapphire OC 7850 from scouring the forums and my own experience should hit 1.2ghz easily with a vcore mod. Use Trixx (from Sapphire) software, it handles all of that including fan profiles.

I got the exact same card. Running BF3 everything max with following results:

stock setting
1920 x 1200 FPS 30s
1920 x 1080 FPS avg 40

OC core 1150, MEM 1350 stock voltage
1920 x 1080 MSAA 4x FPS avg 50
1920 x 1080 MSAA 2x FPS avg 60
