I'm going to be upgrading my brothers old machine with some memory sticks lying around at my place. His PC is a 1.3 Duron (100 Mhz bus) on a Gigabyte 7VAXP and the VIA chipset on it supports up to DDR400 memory. What I want to know is:

Is it ok to run DDR400 memory with just a 100Mhz bus CPU - i.e. 1:2 ratio?

Will upgrading the memory cause Windows XP to want to reactivate?

Thanks in advance.

Sure, but it won't be running @ 200 Mhz, it will be running @ 100 Mhz. The Via chipset didn't have any memory multipliers back then.

Nope, it won't change anything at all, including his performance, unless he'll end up with more RAM, that is.
