Questions about K7S5A

overclock

Senior member
I am looking to purchase an ECS K7S5A to upgrade on my next Federal Holiday. I plan on putting an Athlon XP 1600+ in it. I am upgrading from an IWILL KK266-R. I really don't like how I spent $130 on the IWILL to get left out of the Athlon XP upgradability path. Oh well!

My question is does this board do better with DDR or SDRAM? I currently have 2 x 256 Crucial CAS 2 on the IWILL. I finally got on of the 256 mb DDR Crucial from Best Buy for $25. The only thing is the DDR has Samsung chips which some say sucks. So should I sell the DDR and stick with the SDRAM?

I am excited for my day off in a couple of weeks. Going to do some case mods and use the Dremel I got for Christmas. I need to purchase on Friday to get it in time.

Thanks!

You'll be fine with the Samsung DDR it's been tested for compatability by ECS with the K7S5A, and coupled with the XP you'll see a performance increase over using the XP with SDRAM. I've had a K7S5A since August and have run it with a Duron700/2-128mb sticks of Apacer SDRAM and a 1400T-Bird/256mb stick Crucial 2100DDr and it's run excellent with both set-ups.

Well, as long as we're talking about the K7S5A, could someone please tell me what the upper end of chips speeds the board will support is?

The ECS site simply says that the board supports K7 cpus(Athlon/Duron) and future chips - which I take to mean the XP cpus. But nowhere can I find a mention of the range of cpu speeds. Does this mean it'll support any AMD(K7) cpu of ANY speed or what? 😕

Yes, the K7s5a will run the 2000+ with a later bios version.
