Questions about installing WinXP RC2 on top of WinME?

Hi,

I got chosen to participate in the study to test WinXP RC2 and I have a few questions about it. I'm running WinME right now and I'm confused to whether I should install this version of WinXP over my version of WinME or try to install it another way? If I install the WinXP Home over my version of WinME, will I be able to restore my system back if I wanted to after the study?

Will installing this software on my pc and letting my pc communicate with the people holding the study, allow them to spy on my computer or is this just to send them the information regarding the questionaire that I have to fill out every time I reboot?

I have a cable modem and a router. They say to make sure to allow outbound ftp. Do I have to specify this in my router somehow?

Sorry for all the questions. I was going to call the center conducting the study, but they are closed on the weekends.

One thing that confuses me. They say that if I participate in the study, I will receive a full retail version of WinXP home. As far as I know, I am already selected, but they say to install this software as soon as I get it because they are only looking for 600 people. Does this mean that even if I install the software and participate, I might not be eligable for the WinXP Home version of the software? I don't want to waste my time if I'm not going to get the software.

never upgrade your OS, always go for the 'clean install'. I think that's what it's called.

This way you should be able to get your old OS back too (as long as you don't install xp to the same folder/partition).

The problem is that I'm wanting to install it on a hdd that has an OEM version of WinME with only a restore cd. If I do a clean install, I will lose the copy of WinME, which I want to keep for future needs (in case I sell my pc). I tell you.. This anti piracy crap is making it even tougher to play by the rules. All I want to do here is wipe out my WinME temporarily to install WinXP and because of the way that MS set it up, I can't even do that. If I wipe out WinME, I lose it forever. This is total BS if you ask me.
