Questions about IEEE 1394

I'm upgrading my 7+ yo rig and things have changed over the years. My current mobo has an IEEE 1394 card, but I notice some mobos have 1394 onboard connections and others do not. If I buy a mobo with onboard is the need for a card eliminated? I use mine only to connect to my cable internet modem. A mobo without would, I expect, require a card and a new one will be in order.

For that matter, would I be better off spending $10 for a card whether there's an onboard connection? I know a dedicated video card is better than onboard video, so I was just wondering if the same applied to 1394.

Also, what is the difference in 1394 and 1394a?

Thanking you for your help in advance

Bob

Firewire (1294x) can do Networking but it is Not a good idea to do so.

If you need to use Firewire for device that are specific built for it.

For networking use hardware that intend speicifcaly for Ethernet.

I think that you are incorrect, OP. I doubt that you use your firewire port to connect to your cablemodem. They use ethernet.

Could it be I'm thinking of the LAN port? I just looked at the cable they gave me and it says LAN cable. Apparently I'm noy using firewire at all.

Thanks for setting me straight.
