I wasn't quite sure where to ask this question, but I figured some of you guys here would be able to lead me in the right direction. A friend and I started a website that's been running for about a month now. While it's purely a labor of love, I must admit that it's been more successful than we imagined at this point.
Given my inexperience with any kind of website that garners any significant amount of hits, I'm curious if I should start thinking about putting some sort of ad on the site. We're not really looking at making a large amount of money from this (if it happens though, we won't fight it
), but I like the idea of possibly making back the hosting bill every month, if it were possible.
So, let me list the numbers from this month, and see what you guys think. Please note that while I'm happy with these numbers, I understand they probably aren't anywhere near large enough, which we're fine with. I also understand that this is just the first month, so things could change for the better (or for the worse) as the site matures. I just have no idea what amount of visitors and hits are considered enough to start thinking about putting ads on the site, hence this post.
All of these stats are taken from the built-in Awstats program in CPanel for our site. Even though our site had forums for the entire month, the main site with the content didn't go live until December 5th. For the entire month so far (as of this morning), we've had:
1,465 unique visitors
3,414 visits
30,660 total page views
233,624 total hits
Looking through the stats a bit more, my guess is about 33% of the visits are from my friend and I, so that definitely skews the numbers a bit. Search crawler visits/hits aren't included in these numbers.
So, what do you guys think? Should I just throw a Google Adsense on there and be done with it? Or are the unique visitors good enough that I could possibly get an actual advertiser to put an ad on the site for pretty cheap? Or am I completely naive about the whole thing?
Thanks.
