I actually just bought a VisionTek XTASY GeForce 4 MX420 for $99 at CompUSA and was wonderingif I should take it back and get a better card? I am currently running a PIII 800/133 - 256MB - 32MB TNT2 (not even Ultra) so this card is truely an upgrade. But my buddy said that this G4 MX420 was a crappy card and I should just bite it and spend the extra money on a G4 Ti 4200. I am not really a hardcore gamer at all, just wanted a video card update. What are you opinions on this?

The GF4 Ti 4200 will be limited by ther CPU. But then again, the MX420 is at best 15% faster than a GF2MX. The fastest you will likely get fpr your configurtion is a MX460/MX440 cause they are based on the GF2 architechure which does better on older systems.

EDIT: Just thought I'd add, why'd u get a new vid card if u aren't a gamer? 2D IQ/Performance? if you aren'ta gamer then I'd suggest getting a Radeon 7500 over the GF4Mx's cause they are more well rounded cards although they are slower than the MX440 and 460.

I second that. Either get a Radeon 7500 to get a better 2D and video features or just stay with your older card b/c the 440 woudn't improve anything for you.

Scratch the MX420, it's pretty crappy. Don't get a Geforce4 4200 either, it's overkill with your system. I would go for a radeon 8500 which goes for around 100 bucks online. But if you want nvidida get the mx440, which is dirt cheap online, around $70-$90.

well I got the card for a few reasons, first I did buy one new game, GTA3 and it crawls even at the lowest setting, but I also really liked the SVideo output at 1024x768 available on the MX420. Does the Radeon have a Svideo out? I am also adding a DVD-ROM to my machine and watching my movies on my PC and figured NVIDIA was the way to go. Never really been a big fan of ATI.

MX420 = small redo of MX400 (very old technology) Basically, they added a new memory controller into the Geforce2 MX, and they left the memory bandwidth the same. For the $, a R8500LE is much much faster. Even a Geforce 2 GTS will be faster!

well i went back and returned the MX420 and picked up a Retail ATI Radeon 8500LE 128MB DDR card. Just wondering if anyone knows anything about a card bios flash that enables features from the regular Radeon 8500??? Just heard someone say something about that awhile back. Thanks for all your help guys

radeon 8500 is $97 at newegg. return the overpriced crapUSA crap.

the GF"4"MX is really just a GF2MX with a better memory controller. its not as good as the one on the GF3 series, though. they also gave it quite a bit more mem bandwidth than the GF2MX was ever allowed. that doesn't mean it isn't outperformed by a GF3Ti200.
