Hi,

I bought a Creative 12x dvd player and got it to work wonderfully with my Celeron 366 when DMA is enabled and I use the onboard support of a ATI video card with the ATI software.

I'm thinking of returning the Creative drive that I bought locally and buying either a Toshiba or Pioneer 16x OEM drive online for much cheaper. I just read somewhere where the Pioneer drive uses a lot of cpu power comparitively.

Do you think I will have problems with the Pioneer if I get great playback with the 12x Creative player? I don't want to go and grab another player because I thought that dvd ran fine on this system only to find out that it won't run very well with a different player. Is this cpu usage thing just splitting hairs or should I raelly be concerned about this? If I buy it online, there is no way that I'm paying to ship it back and eat a 15% restocking fee. I'll either keep the drive until I get a faster system or sell it off. Either way, I'll probably lose money.

TIA,

Sal

I don't think you should have any problem at all wth a different drive for DVD Play back. I had a celeron 300 and 64mb memory a sis 6326 Vid card and everything ran just fine with a 1x and 2x drive. If you are really concerned about the quality you can get a decoder card reletively cheap, usually around $50 shipped. Keep an eye out amazon had a deal for a dvd drive and holly wood plus decoder for a low priceDVD Kit $49.99

No room for a decoder card in this system. It will have to run off the dvd support of this ATI card. I'm wondering if it runs beautifully off the 12x Creative dvd drive, will it run just as well off a Pioneer?

Thanks again,
