questions about dell 2005fpw...

i want to purchase this monitor, but i was wondering a few things, hopefully someone here owns one and can answer these questions.

i see that the monitor has dvi, vga, and component ins. can i connect my mac mini and desktop pc to this monitor simultaneously? mac mini via dvi and pc via vga? and if so, can i switch between the two inputs? lets say both computers are on, how can i choose which is displayed?

also, i know you can rotate the monitor so you can view it long ways, is this done by hardware or software? meaning, will my mac mini allow this?

i use my mac mini for general everyday stuff (internet and email), but my pc is all for games and storage. i just want to share one nice monitor between the two and do it conveniently.

and finally, what do you guys think about this monitor in general, good for the price (roughly $525 wtih the coupon code)? i also understand about the monitor being widescreen (16:10) and scaling, its not an issue, i can deal with it.

a. I believe you can connect both at the same time. There is a button on the monitor to toggle inputs.
b. Monitor rotation is done through software. I do it through my graphics drivers, so I would assume there is something similar for macs.
c. The 2005fpw is awesome for pretty much anything you want to do. I got mine for something like $480 and I am very pleased. Scaling is not a problem with games, though the one thing I would look out for is backlight bleeding. Dell's return policy can't be beat though.

And welcome to the forums by the way 🙂

wow, that was a quick reply.

thanks for the welcome and the information, that helps me out a lot, going to actually order it right now.

i use to browse through the forums for while, normally i can find the info i needed. this time it was specific, so i thought i would ask, thanks for not saying "use search you newb" 🙂

btw, what did you have before you bought the 2005fpw? i have a 17" LG L1720P and its nice, but i really like the widescreens, especially after i saw apples 20" cinema display, too bad it costs too much.

thanks again.

Well I don't think I have the authority to tell people to "go search" being that I'm usually the one with the question asked 15 other times 😉. Some people on these forums are ridiculously knowledgable.. convinced me to get a 2005fpw and I haven't looked back since. Upgraded from a Dell M991 CRT, and now I can't even look at the thing after going widescreen.

The 2005 does NOT have component inputs it has composite which is not as good. As for the monitor being able to rotate. It can be done with the OSD. I personally just use nvidia software with my 2405 though. I don't ever use that feature anyways.

it doesnt have component? why did i think it did, oh well, it doesnt matter, i just wanted to know about dvi and vga switching.

nobody has pictures of the 2005 and another monitor side by side would they? just wondering, thats all. like it matters, already ordered it 🙂

thanks again guys.

2005 has COMPOSITE input, which is very different, and very much crappier than component inputs. Although it also has S-video, which is not much worse than component. Those inputs can also be viewed through a built in PnP feature, although it didn't seem that useful to me.

I don't see why anyone would turn a 2005 sideways. A rotated widescreen monitor would look so odd and would only be useful for a really long webpage or something.

Excellent gaming and dvd viewing panel though, and pretty good vga performance from my own experience, so you should have a great looking screen for both your pc and mac.

those are nice links, that helps me out a lot.

seems as though, judging from the pics of the 2001 vs 2005, that when compared to my 17", the 2005 should be ever slightly larger vertically, but a good bit more horizontally. thats what i want. i like putting windows side by side and it sucks have to resize them smaller so they fit on the 17" together.

got my order confirmation, estimated ship date is thursday the 21st 🙁 i really wanted it this week so i can mess with it over the weekend. its okay though, its dell, it might ship earlier and i might actually get it this week.

maybe i'll take some pics of it compared to my 17" if anyone actually cares, but dont expect a review, i'm not that great with wording 🙂

Dell alsmost always ships before their estimated ship date. It's more of a latest day it will ship rather than estimated. I bet it will probably ship Monday or something.

I don't believe you can rotate the screen in OSX.

I am getting a Mac Mini on monday and have a 2005fpw myself.

I'll let you know.

😀
