Questions about cruises

I'm thinking about taking a cruise in March for spring break and I just have a couple questions.

How bad is the boat movement? Is it bad enough to get motion sickness? I can't imagine those megaton boats rocking as much as the small speedboats.

If you've been on one, positive or negative experience?

I've been on two cruises before. They were both a great time.

As for motion sickness, I've never really been effected by motion sickness but the only time I could even really tell I was on a boat was in the lower levels walking in the hallways where the cabins are. That might have just been me tho, walking down a long semi-narrow hallway. Perhaps a sort of vertigo effect. All in all, it was barely noticable at all and wouldn't ruin the trip.

Have a good time, definitely go snorkeling at port.
 
Two cruises so far and no sea sickness. We even weathered a tropical depression which had a few members of our family a little queasy, but that was worst case scenario, with a lot of wind and rocking. Make sure you are not dieting, as you WILL gain weight. Also, the cruise lines make a ton o' cash on their onboard micxed drink specials. Either look for a package deal (5 drinks for $20 as an example) or refrain from paying the $7 a drink that they try and shove down your throat at all meals and on the upper deck. We cruised to Bermuda two years ago and Catalina Island and Ensenada last year. I have web pages offering up some great pics of both pages if you are interested.
 
I'm real bad with motion sickness, but never had it when I went on a cruise. You should be fine as long as its a big ship.
 
They had 12-15' seas our first night out which was supposedly considered on the upper side of 'moderate' scale according to what our in-room TV channel with ship info said. We didn't notice it when we were at dinner that night as the restaurant was in the middle of the ship (where the sway was least) but we did notice it when trying to walk to our cabin later that night. It wasn't bad. Just like trying to walk down the aisle of a bus that's on the highway and slowly changing lanes constantly. I personally found it kind of soothing when going to sleep - ironically it was the lack of motion of the ship that woke me up when we arrived in port the following the morning. The rest of the cruise had relatively calm seas and we could barely feel the movement. Just a VERY gradual and slow sense of movement. This was on one of the big Disney cruise ships which is roughly 950' long. My wife is prone to airsickness and she didn't have any problems.
 
I've been on one. I did get motion sickness, as well as my mom, but my dad and sister were seemingly unaffected, so I'd say it depends. the boat doesn't necessarily rock, but you can definitely feel a gradual rolling left and right at times, especially on the upper decks. I would sometimes stumble around while walking outside, but when I was indoors it was hardly noticeable.

As for the experience, imo cruises are designed more for adults than anything else. On the ship, there's not much to do besides gamble, drink, and eat, and I could only do one of the three since I was only 16. But the eating was fantastic - 24 hour dining. I felt the port stops were more fun than the ship itself, but that's just my $0.02.
 
Cruises Suck IMHO.

Better To get a Week at an ALL-inclusive place in Punta Cana, Cancun, or Puerto Vallerta.


Unlimited Booze and Decent food.


Cruises Suck Because You have a schedule of what and when to do it and when to eat dinner.

I get super bad motion sickness since a little mishap last year. I got kicked on the ear which ruptured my eardrum. I think it also threw off my sense of balance and I've had wicked motion sickness since then. I can't ride in the back seat of a car on the highway without getting sick.

That would be my only concern about taking a cruise. I don't alcohol much so I don't see me spending a lot of money on the drinks.

Redsox - I actually read your thread right before I started this one. Seemed like you had a great time. Cept' for non-stingrays.
 

don't get a cabin at the rear of the boat above the engines...not something people think about when choosing their rooms...

Cruises serve food 24/7. The breakfasts/lunch/dinners are scheduled, but they usually have 3-4 different serving times.
 
I've been on four cruises and have never been seasick, but on one cruise, there was some rough weather, and I was one of the few passengers walking around the ship on the first night out. My whole family was seasick in their cabins. 🙂

EDIT: Also, I like the gentle rolling motion of the ships. It puts me to sleep.
 
Our cruise experience was better than any vacation we've ever taken in our life. Food at any time day or night. You get to travel to many different places without actually travelling. You get the pools on deck. You get tons of entertainment at night. You get a nice fancy dinner every night. You get the chicks by the pool every day. Did I mention the food at any time ? Oh and no motion sickness... you can't even feel the boat move unless you're out by the sides outside. Do yourself a favor though... get a cabin room with a window... we were upgraded and found it helped our experience. I'd hate to think what it'd be like not even knowing if it were morning or night out there.

Anyway, we went through Princess Cruises and had a blast - even got engaged on the boat (it was a planned surprise). We can't wait to do it again (the cruising) through Royal Caribbean next time. Disney is good too I hear. Well worth the $$$$.$$ for a couple.
 
I am taking a cruise for my honeymoon, and this will be my first cruise, my biggest concern is getting seasick. I plan on getting the seaband thingy (the one that runs on battery) for around $70. I heard they work pretty well, you should check it out too.
 
I was on a cruise last march. I had very minimal seasickness and im one to get a lot of motion sickness. I got seasick every time we left a port, but it didnt last very long. They have some stuff they give you at the information counter for the seasickness and it works instantly. We also had a storm one day while we were at sea but it wasnt bad at all. The ships are so large that they dont really rock very much.

Yeah I was thinking about that but I'm a cheap-ass recent college grad but I would like to try it out. I've dramamine before and it seems to just make me sleepy.

So far seems like everyone's experience has been cept for one, now I just need to start saving up money and get a job

The only one I've been on was a 4 day royal carribean. L.A., Catalina, San Diego, Ensenada, and back. Catalina was nice, the rest of the stops sucked. But the ship was a lot of fun and we had a great time overall.

Yes, meals with table service are scheduled at specific times, but most ships also have buffets available all the time. Some are even open 24 hours a day. Plus you can get room service any time you want.

I got mildly seasick. Took some motion sickness medication and that got rid of it. Our ship was actually one of the smaller ones, so I think there was more noticeable motion than on the giant ships.

Remember that even though all your food, room cleaning, etc., is free, tipping is customary. There are guides about what the normal tipping amounts are. I heard someone say $150 for a couple. That is for your waiter (you normally have the same waiter and assigned seats for every meal, at least dinners), the maids, etc.
 
Get some dramamine patches from your doctor beforehand.

But, I would cut it in half otherwise you'll sleep through the cruise.

The wife got a little queasy, but for me it felt like being rocked in a rocking chair.
