Questions about College/Higher Education

I didn't opt for a four year university because I didn't do so hot in high school, I may have been able to make it in, but wasn't sure, I didn't do so hot in high school and I?m awful at math.

I'm currently attending a Hennepin Tech college for Network Administration/Analyst Associates in applied science degree. I enjoy class there and like it but I have some questions.

What I'm basically asking is, in a field working with corporate networks, a network admin for a company or other IT careers, what is looked for most? Something I know the University of Minnesota offers is a bachelors in applied science degree which most of my credits would transfer over into if I wanted to go that route.

So I also was wondering what would an employer see as a difference between bachelors of applied science degree compared to a computer science degree.

I?m basically curious as to what the best route is for me to take or what experiences other people have had.

Want a job? Get the bachelors.

Edit: I have 5 years experience at an ISP... and I'm like 10 credits away from my associates, and I can't do better then 10/hr. Get the bachelors.

Bachelors of computer science or bachelors of applied sciences? From how i understand is computer science is more difficult.

The Bachelors of Computer Science is likely to go further and get better pay. However, that's not to say you can't be successful without it, just that it may be more difficult.

Try to get a job with where you're at right now. Stay w/ that job while earning a bachelors at a 4 year

I am currently working on a second bachelors in biology, I have a BA in Business Information Systems. When hiring managers are looking through resume's who would you hire? The candidate who went to a trade school or a University? Go with the bachelors degree. If you can't hang with computer sci, go with something like Computer Information Systems (CIS) or MIS Management Information Systems. You will likely find these majors in the business school in your Uni.

I've never heard of of an applied science degree, but I'm guessing that they focus on coursework more geared on applied topics? That is, versus theoretical. Sort of what a 2 year technical degree does, but perhaps extended into a 4 year program but I've never seen anything like that.

Hell even a bachelor's degree isn't worth much in the tech field these days, choose a different field

http://www.cce.umn.edu/degrees/bas/iti/

That would be an example of what I was talking about

University of Minnesota's Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) program with a major in Information Technology Infrastructure (ITI)

If you don't think you can get into a 4 year university, why are you considering a bachelor's in computer science? You'll probably get in to a university, but you should put more considerationg into what you major in.

That's very true, requirements to get into the computer science department is really strict these days due to the large number of people who want to get in... at my school, you have to maintain a B average the first 2 yrs or you get kicked out...

Will you be able to get in? If so, go for it... I think a computer science degree will be better recognized than an applied science degree...

If not, go for the applied science... having a bachelor's is definitely better than none

Yeah I have that MIS degree, got me a job, but not the money I was looking for. I switched gears completely and went into biology for a biotech or future pharmacy career.
I would attempt at a CS degree first, not being good at math is not an excuse. If you put in the time, you well get the grades you deserve, if it is too much stress and time for you go with the ITI degree.

At least with a bachelors you open more doors for yourself in the future.

If you're not into math, don't go CompSci at the U. I have quite a few friends in the IT and any major there is NOT math-lite. If you have a good GPA (3.8+) try for Carlson and do an MIS major. Great recruiting out of Carlson; guaranteed job if you stay in the midwest. I've never heard anything about the BAS degree, but if you can make use of the IT recruiting department, it could be worth it. Recruiting is really what it all comes down to.
