questions about car accident

i was rear-ended while waiting my turn at a U-turn. i then made my turn and went into a gas station right in front of the scene (i should have stayed there but i guess i was shaken and didnt think right). i inspected my car's rear bumper and expected the other driver to follow me into the gas station. instead, the other car just left, i didnt even get the license plate number. my car hardly sustained any damage, just a dot of paint chip.
my questions are: should i contact my insurance company even though i dont plan on filing a claim and i am not at all injured? and if i do, will they treat it like a claim and will it affect my premium?

Don't contact your insurance company!!
best bet would have been have the dude pay for the scratch out of his pocket.
no sense making a claim over like a $100 repair (probably at most?)
i'd say just bite and pay to fix the scratch now.

I would have made a police report, and judging by your statement,NOT call my insurance company right away,if at all.Yes your policy will go up.

it was a hit and run.

and if you arent making a claim dont bother calling the insurance company. you could report it to the cops but thats really no big deal either since you dont have any information to give them.

what i meant was: am i obligated to report this accident in case the other driver sue me.
i dont want to file a claim because it's too minor and will not worth more than my deductible.

yeah, i'd call the police about a hit and run.

And that will accomplish nothing but spending alot of time waiting around, getting his insurance raised for damage that can likely be repaired for < the deductible.

no your policy wont go up UNLESS you reach a certain amount in claims. Insurance companies have a cap like say $800 before they effect your insurance policy.

Edit: *Lots of experience being an accident claim rep*

i guess neither of us can comment on this because neither of us were there. if i was struck hard by a random vehicle and they left, i'd be calling the police ... whether there was damage/injuries or not.

now we dont know how hard he was hit, but he did say he was shaken. i'd be quite angry if someone hit me enough to "shake" me and then left

ALWAYS CALL THE POLICE. Even if you don't call the insurance company or anything. Tell them it was minor and such, but you don't need any assistance for it. Otherwise that other person could have gotten your plate numbers and called the cops and reported you as a hit and run. They will match up the paint scratches and you will be charged despite the fact that it was not your fault.
