Questions about blogs

I've been thinking of putting together a blog for awhile now but I have a few questions.

How long does it take on average to put together a simple blog?

I would like to create a music based blog, how would I go about providing streaming music and music downloads?

Is it unusual for a blog to have forums? I would like to use my blog as a way to attract people to a music forum.

thanks for any info

Check out some of the more famous ones:

Stereogum
Sixeyes
Large Hearted Boy
Copy, Right?

Etc..

Find those and then you will link to thousands of others...

Blogs don't normally have forums, since the blog itself is a discussion board. You can score a blog anywhere nowadays, some are free with lots of ads orthers are not.

Do you have webspace? If so, i suggest using wordpress. It's extremely easy to use. It's a simple download from their site and then an upload to your web space, configure one page and bam you are set.

If not, go with a steriogum one or something similar, they are all pretty much the same with general customizability (is that a word) options.

However If you want to do streaming downloads and what not then I suggest making a website and adding a blog to it. A blog, in its most primitive state, is generally an online journal that people can post about. So this might be as helpful as just a normal website would be with media and whatnot.

GL to you.

So should I maybe go with a website opposed to a blog? Are there any free web-building kits out there? (my html skills are kinda sucky)

If you're just doing blogging and forums, why not just use WordPress? It handles static pages too if you need them. And it's easy to add streaming audio to posts -- there're tons of plugins for it. Then for forums you can use phpBB or something. A lot of hosts have these things available for one-click installation. You don't need to learn any html. Or even PHP. Just some basic webmastering stuff, like how to add SQL code.

Wordpress is great and can be installed with a few clicks via Fantastico.

You can then skin WP to the look you want.

Mambo or Joomble is also something you may want to look at to.

WordPress is great.

I use it on my own site along with coppermine as a simple image gallery to keep in touch with family.

My brother has a music blog using wordpress that has streaming music.

http://www.homegrownmp3s.com

I would say that it is definately one of the better blogging systems out there.

Again, if you have the webspace then Wordpress FTW. Otherwise you can score a free blog elsewhere on a website, google it.

I was just throwing out options, but I wouldn't recommend creating a website even if it is from a template or development software. There is a LOT that needs to be done to keep a website up to date and if you are confident in your lack of confidence as far as your web development skills then don't bother.

GL still!
