Questions about AMD X2's

Hi.

It's mostly just out of curiosity ...

The AMD X2's have two cores, ok that's cool. But, what are the actual models (or should I say "revisions") ? Are they two Venices ? Two San Diego's ? Or are they simply new cores ?

And, finally, will the actual Motherboards that support Socket 939 automatically support X2's when they are released ? Or will we have to update / flash our Motherboard's BIOS in order to use them ?

Thanks.

Actually, it has been said that many mobos will work without a bios flash, but may not correctly identify the cpu. And I think they are dual venice cores, except the 4800, which I think is a dial sandiego core.

athlon "X2" literally = athlon times 2 😉

4200+ & 4600+ = 2x venice

4400+ & 4800+ = 2x San Diegos

😀😀😀

Well I'm actually very interested by one of the X2 model that'll be released, the 4400+. Not only out of curiosity.

I would greatly appreciate "official" information if possible. I hope it's possible to use them right out of the box without flashing the BIOS. I never did that before. And I don't have a Floppy Disk Drive (and I believe that's necessary for a BIOS flash).

As for what's the core model, well that's more for curiosity since I never read any facts about that. I just hope it's not NewCastles or older ones. Although that'd be quite ... stupid, actually. It's surely either Venices or San Diego's ... or both, actually.

You can do a bios flash from windows with some of the newer mobos.....probably yours, check asus site.

yeah i wouldn't worry about flashing the BIOS, it was pretty much confirmed somewhere that there was only two boards makes, that would not support it on the current BIOS's, and those were the Abit and EpoX, i think Abit now have a working BIOS but dont quote me.

If you buy one you will be able to just wack it in boot up fine and thats it.. when the new BIOS's come out you can then just flash to that using the application winflash (recommended for in windows flashing😉) ..

Oh ok, that's what I heard a while ago. I didn't remember the name !

WinFlash !

Thanks guys !

I can't imagine spending over $500 on a processor. I think I'll just go with a fast SD 3700+ for now and then buy a dual core when their prices are lower and they have more practical use

Pretty crazy huh.. Last time I did that was for a 233MMX back when Intel did'nt sell cheap chips and comps were over $2000.

But it's worth it. You're getting two 3700 san deigos for only 50% more money for second one. Think about it that way.

And the flat out dominance you'd have.. no need for another comp at least for 2 years maybe 4. CPUs aint moving much more than they are already at. For the last two years we've seen very minimal improvments historically speaking.

The new cores are manchester and toledo. I think that 4400+ & 4800+ are toledo
(equivalent of 2x San Diego) and the rest are manchester(equivalent of 2x Venice).

The last three bios issued for my board A8N-SLI deluxe support dual core, I think other makers have already issued bios also. Just research the available downloads on the mfg website of the boards you are interested in
