Questions about accoustic management on IBM 75GXP hd

Right now, mine is disabled. While I have an idea, what exactly is it? If it's enabled, does either the random access time or the read burst speed increase? What are the advantages of enabling it or keeping it disabled? If enabled, what settings are recommended?

Edit: Before I start playing with it, I just want to get a few tips. Thanks.

The accoustic management for the IBM or for that matter any other brand HD basically makes the drive quiter during seeks... which of course has a drawback of making the random access time go up... the read burst isn't affected too much. I've played around with it before on my IBM drives and from what I remember the accoustic management has three levels you can set it at. From what I remember from running benchmarks on HD Tach, with it set to quietest Random Access time went from around 12.5 ms to 18-19 ms, but the drive was barely audible during the test. I personally have accoustic management turned off on my IBM drives because to me the performance degradation isn't worth it, but I do have the accoustic management turn on, on my Maxtor drives becaues they are mainly just used for backups where performance isn't as important.

Thanks, LeeBear. That's a significant increase for a drive that's not that noisy. I bought the drive for its performance so I'm leaving it disabled as well. Thanks for the assist.
