Questions about a motherboard problem

Over the last two evenings my computer was acting odder and odder. It started with random freezes while playing games, moved through random window freezes, BSODs and on to freezes during POST. Finally the computer refused to boot/POST at all (Power would come on for a a second and then the computer would shut itself off)

At first I thought it was ram, but it turns out that if at any point ram slot 1 is occupied by any type of ram the computer will no longer boot. I have run memtest and windows memory diagnostic with the slot empty and there are no errors (double checked all of my ram sticks on slots 0,2,3)

What would cause a ram slot to go bad in the span of 20 hours?

More importantly, could it be something that will eventually lead to my computers demise?

Thanks guys!

Motherboard: Gigabyte P965-DS3
Ram: A-Data 2x2gb ddr800 and Corsair 2x512 ddr800

That's a hard call. But I once got 4 msi rma boards with bad memory controllers; msi finally just sent me a different chipset board that was brand new. I would rma the board is all your memory sticks work in just 3 out of 4 slots. Gigabyte is a bit touchy about rma's. Don't know how their website software works, or if you have to call first.
