My friend is looking for a 4.1/5.1 speaker system. He's not very savvy about shopping, so hopefully your advice will help before he goes to the local electronics store and buys a junk set of speakers.

He's not looking to connect to his computer, but rather his DVD player. We were looking at the Logitech Z560, but couldn't find information about the outputs. I believe they are the typical 1/8" stereo minijack outputs, and his DVD player will need RCA phono-type connections. If so, do you reccommend the use of adapters or a different set altogether? He also wants the speakers to be wall-mountable.

thanks for the advice.

If you plan on connecting it to your dvd player, youre not going to get any more than 2 channel stereo from the logitech Z560s.

If you want surround sound directly to the speakers, youre going to either need 6 discrete outputs on the DVD player, and a set of 5.1 speakers. Or if your DVD does not have its own decoder (most dont), you need to buy a speaker set with a decoder. DTTT 2500, and I believe one of the Boston Acoustics speakers have them.

Dont bother with these 5.1 speakers for computers... They're useless, especially if you are planning to connect to a DVD player...

Get a home threater in a box set, it will blow away ANY 5.1 computer speakers... These home threater sets are not expensive now anyways, I got my 350-watt set for $350 CAN a yr ago, which is a little more than $200 US... It includes 5 speakers, receiver and a subwoofer... It will blow the doors off any 5.1 computer speakers...

EDIT: As for connection, it depends on what his DVD player supports... most DVD players do not have a built-in DVD decoder, and it will output the signal through S/PDIF or Optical digital out... Then you will need to buy a home threater receiver that has a DVD decoder (most home threater in a box ones do) w/ S/PDIF-in or optical-in... After that, only 1 cable connects the DVD player and receiver to get full digital surround sound...
