I have 4 computers networked, each with 10/100 nics. They work fine on a 10mps hub.I bought a 10/100 switch,d-link DSS-5+,and two work great, one at 10 instead of 100,and one refuses to work.I`m sort of new at networking, any ideas?I`m not sure what model the nics are,but the one that doesn`t work on the switch is the same as one that does work.

Hi,
2 work and 1 doesn't? What about the 4th? Anyway, check your settings in the network properties. Your NICs should be set to autodetect, but you can set them manually to 100BaseT. I would check your cat5 cables first. 10MB connections are alot more tollerant of cable errors. Also, make sure your wires don;t parrallel any power lines. This also has a greater affect on 100mb connections. If all three of these are OK, THEN check and mess with your NIC drivers and other settings. I would have sent you to homepclan.com, since that is where I started and it helped me alot, however they seem to be temporarily down. You will need to know Ping/Tracert/winipcfg commands and the like to check your connections fully. I'm assuming since everything worked before, that your network settings are correct and that there is just an error with your cables and POSSIBLY(not likely) with your switch. Double check everything and get back to us.

I`m running windows ME,I can`t find an option for setting the nic from auto to 10 or 100.Mabey i`m looking over it,i`ll go back and check again.I checked the cables 3 times, seem ok(used a continuity tester)could the nic`s be bad?

Ok,on the newer nic,it has autosense, but it`s one of the working ones. The one that doesn`t work has these options

802.1p support
flow control
media type network address

No,it has a seperate uplink port.I`ve changed the cables around also, and moved computers to different cables. All else I see to do is buy new nics.

from what it sounds is that some of the NICs are old and that they are not compatible with the 100 meg network. I would go ahead and buy some new network cards. 10 bucks a pop for some generic with realtek chips. Realtek is supported by Linux, Novell, Any Windows, Unix, etc. I have never had any drivers problems with this chip....

Hi,
You may want to setup your switch at 10mb first. I've never used that switch before, but it may have a toggle between 100 and 10 connection.
As Always,
D
