Question

Okay, this may seem like a stupid question. However, I want to know if it is illegal to download anime off the internet. I am having a hard time waiting for the end of FMA on Adult Swim (got at least another month to go) so I would consider downloading the subs. First, I want to know if its legal because well, I would prefer to not do anything to get the FBI at my door. I am not sure about the legality because it is not made in the USA and not sure how that works as far as patents and copyrights go. Any response would be appreciated.

It's nonly illegal if you get caught.

(I believe stealing any Copyrighted work without the owner's implied permission is illegal damn near everywhere)

I brought the question up because I don't know how it works when something was originally from another country. Such as I do not know if US patents apply in Japan and vice versa.

That would mean I as a Canadian could download all of the American movies. This is not the case.

So what is the case? Illegal period?

After watching the dubbed versions of FMA on Adult Swim since November of 2004, I am getting a little impatient as I wait for the final ending (like five episodes left to air). It is not that I want to get it over or anything, but it is hard to wait because of how good the last six have been. Major cliff hangers in each episode. However, I would have been willing to watch sub titled episodes, but I guess it is illegal even though it is from Japan. I just heard of some situations where organizations that deal with illegal downloading were unable to do anything because the content was from another country or something.

Correct me if I'm wrong but when it gets licensed in the US, then its it illegal to download.

I'm pretty sure this is the case. A lot of anime gets subbed and released online, but once it's officially released and licensed in the US by the owner, it can't be downloaded legally.
