Ok, its about the HD. I had my old computer (1999) and when stuff would load it would make load noises like I dont know how to explain it. But it was very noticable. My friends newer computer's HD didnt really make noise or I didnt notice it much. But on my new rig I notice it and I was wodering if its normal for the HD to make like loading noises?

Thanks

if it's louder than you'd usually experience, or there's clicking noise, the hard drive is starting to wear out and will eventually fail. time to back it up and find a replacement.

reformatting constantly does increase wear on the disk, but i dont know how often you formatted in that time frame. so thats not highly probably, you probably got an unlucky hdd of the bunch. like i said, if it's louder and acting more unusual(clicks) than it usually should, then you should be perceptive about it.

Doesn't matter how old it is, hard drives fail all the time and they don't make noise, other then typically quiet clicks, hums and buzzes.

Anything that starts to sound loud or clunky might mean a failure is on the way and yes reformatting all the time is hard on it, so is doing defrags all the time too.

Return it for a RMA to get and get a new one.

SO basically it should be somewhat quiet? Like mine is making loud "grumbling noise." Its not like really loud but its somewhat annoying hearing the grumbling. What would I say if I brought it back? And BTW I reformatted quite a bit maybe 20 times since I got it. (Dont ask why) Maybe even more :/. It doesnt do it when it idles or like browsing the net. Its like when I load CS maps or games. But is it still normal to make those noises. Because my Mom's computer is pretty quit it its like more of a small buzz noise.

This can also be a brand issue. Some hard drives are definatly louder than others and depending on your hearing (Mine is very good and computer noise drives me nuts) this can be a big issue. It does not mean your hard drive is definatly bad, but it does not mean it is not going bad either. It is still a possibility.

If its just a loud hard drive the best thing to do is to set the computer in the floor or off to the side of your desk. That helps lower the noise. It can be at its worst especially if you have your computer up on top of a desk sitting right next to your monitor. But good luck and I hope it is a bad hard drive. That way you can get it replaced and problem fixed. If its not its either something you have to try to compensate by getting a better case or move the computer around to try to get it further from your ears.

Well do you think I would be able to return it to the store and purchase/trade in for a more quiet HD? I belive the HD was OEM. It would prolly help if you knew the model. SeaGate Sata 160 GB. The store I bought it from isnt Best Buy or some type of store like that. Its just computer parts. SO would I be able to return it jsut like that because "I dont know it, it's making to much noise?" I dont know what the return policy at the store is but I got a 1 year warrenty.

Well I guess my report on sounds was not so easy to follow. Noises with hard drives take a little experience to understand, but not much though just a tad to know the differences between normal and bad. The thing is yes as dfloyd said some are louder then others, but you're just going to have to figure out if it's normal or it's a mechanical problem.

Noises are more common in older generation drives. The newer drives out now are getting pretty quiet, mine you can stick your ear on it, while it's running and can hardly hear a thing.

Good rule of thumb a hard drive doesn't get noiser as it gets older, unless it has problems.

Well I have a 7200.7 Seagate Baracudda 160 GB Sata HD. Would that be called an older gen. And If I went with a 7200.8 (I forget if theres a .9) would that be more quiet, or even a different company. If so could you list me a few please.
