Yes from what I've heard the older maxtor drives are fine but these new ones are ****. Every single person I've seen with a maxtor drive has had it fail in a pathetic amount of time.

the new ones are crap. I had a sata die on me within 30 days, the next one lasted a year. I started buying seagates again as I have one from 2001 that is alive and kicking to this day.

Nope, every Maxtor drive I've owned has died, been RMA'd and then promptly died again. I think their QA team snorts coke at work.

I used to have a 5GB Maxtor that I gave away when I upgraded, I hear it's still going strong. I've had a few between then and now, a 20GB and an 80GB, both were horrible and failed within a year. I've also been using Samsung SATA drives for the past year or so, no issues at all, as well as Seagate and WD, both have been wonderful.

Everything else > Maxtor

WD all the way!!

Last job I worked at we went through replacing countless Maxtors that would end up always dying.

They suck.

I've never had a Maxtor die on me. Currently have a 40GB that's been in use at least 3 years and a 160GB that's been in use for a year.

Wow... at my least job WD was the brand we had to replace the most.

I have an 80 GB Maxtor from '02 or '03 acting as the system drive in this machine (running both WinXP and Ubuntu, not that it matters), and I've not had any problems with it. I had an 80 GB Maxtor external drive from '02 or so... but it died (I would suspect due to physical abuse). I've got a handful of 10 GB Maxtor drives around here that were manufactured in 99, and other than being the loudest drives I've even dealt with, they work just as well as when they were new.
