Should I have my CD and Hard drive on one IDE cable. Is it slower with 2 IDE cables. Right now i have my hard drive on the Primary IDE cable, and the DVD drive on the Secondary IDE cable. Input would be greatly appreciated

Sounds like youhave the best fit - each device as Master on its own IDE channel, HDD on 1 and DVD on 2.

if you have multiple devices on one cable, the bus will default to the lower speed device (optical drives)

keeping them separated is the best way to do it

The idea of the bus defaulting to the lower speed has not been true for quite a while as long as you are using 80 wire cable.
If you only have two devices then it is best to keep them on separate channels because then they don't have to share the bandwidth of the channel.
