Question with home furnace

So I get a call from my parents and they told me that the fire in their home furnace went out and they have no idea how to get it back on. Obviously its freezing? What is the general solution to this?


EDIT: sorry for have no provided more information, I am not familiar myself. It is a gas furnace, and the maintenance people can't help because it's sunday.

Is it an oil furnace? Did they run out of oil?

Do they have a service contract?

It could be a number of things but you have provided zero information.

Have them call service, somebody will be out to fix it.

Otherwise follow Eli's link to pilot light. Make sure you hold down the button for at least a minute before letting go once it's lit.

😕 Well, your parents and yourself can't fix the problem. Who are you going to call instead? Ghostbusters?

The gas company should be able to send out emergency people b/c it's a weekend.

If the pilot light just went out, not really. But if they don't think they can handle it, it would be best. It's pretty simple though, just read a few links.

Tell them to get a neighbor that is familiar with furnace to check it out for them.

What type of ignition do they have, pilot (what type of pilot), hot surface, or electronic sparks?

Check user information that came with the furnace.

Hadrian - it's most likely the pilot light. If it isn't then you will need to have service take care of it. The manual will have some basic troubleshooting that you can try.

If your folks are facing a really cold night then prepare for it. If not then they can call SOMEBODY to come fix it this evening - there are plenty of companies that would be more than happy to take care of it. I thought this was a home and keeping the furnace working was their responsibility?

Get a HVAC warranty through GE for around $150 a year with a $50 deductible for repairs.

Is it their home? If so, then have them call a repairman. Most work around the clock, so you should have no problem getting someone.

If it isn't, then I feel for them. It could be days before they get it fixed. Some ladlords in NY can really be harsh. I'm just a state over, and it's going to be <20 degrees tonight.
