I would question that also. If it were me I would get an adapter with fan speed tail to plug into your mobo header.
 
It has a high possibility of burning the header. I would just go the safe route and get a 3-to-4-pin adaptor. There's a good deal in the "Hot Deals" forum on these adaptors right now.
 
yea i would have just made one, but all of my stuff is in Houston, and I'm in Austin. I got one at fry's for 3 bucks, mad ripoff, but had to be done.
 
Nope...all of the new recent boards headers can handle it no problem. My KK266-R, both 8K7A+'s, and my ECS can all handle a Delta fan on the board headers no problem...🙂
