Question: Why is it hax0r and not hak0r or hack0r?

Because when you are up all night dumpster diving, you sleep through English class...

I bet the correct answer would be something like:
"1f j00 h4f 2 45k, j00r n0t l33t 3nuf t0 kn0w! h4h4h4h4h4! w00t! j00 h4v 833n 0wn3d 8y jz3r0!"

But in all honesty, I don't really know.

XOR is shorthand for the "exclusive or" operation.

The "exclusive or" operation is a commutative operation between two bits, such that:

0 XOR 0 = 0
0 XOR 1 = 1
1 XOR 0 = 1
1 XOR 1 = 0

The placement of "XOR" (pronounced ecksor) in place of the end of the word "hacker" is a sort of hacker in-joke. It sort of sounds similar, and "exclusive or" is the sort of thing that only hackers know. (Along with computer scientists and logicians maybe.)

As for why the spelling is hax0r as opposed to haxor, it's just hackers trying to be cool by slightly misspelling words.

This last phenomenon is evident in such other misspellings as pr0n, w00t, etc.

Most of the s'kiddies (props to the reg for that) I know wouldn't know XOR from NOT if it slapped them across the face. Is that origin really listed in any Jargon file or Hackers' (51c haha) dictionary???

And pr0n and w00t are DEFINITELY NOT misspellings! hehe

Pr0n and w00t are misspellings by virtue of the fact that the digit zero (0) is not part of the English alphabet.
