I mean, he has won both a Stanley Cup, a Gold Medal, and is the youngest captain of a team in the NHL ever......

What gives?

I don't really follow hockey at all, but it's sports. Love/hate is usually completely irrational for sports. It's just how sports fans are.

Also, the better someone is, the more love/hate there is. Him being pretty good makes the haters come out all the more. Same way people hate the Yankees, Red Sox, Lakers, Celtics, Patriots, Colts, etc.

Not that many people really hate the, I don't know, Kansas City Royals, Detroit Lions, St Louis Rams, Timberwolves, etc.

Personally, I don't really root for/against teams or players that often. I follow sports just to get entertained by awesome plays and close games, but I'm most likely in the minority.

Because the NHL, NBC, Versus, etc all have been bowing down to him like he's the second coming of Gretzky ever since he was drafted. He isn't. Other players have been just as good as he has been, and yet they don't get anywhere near the same attention.

Also, he's a giant bitch.

the problem generally stems from the media constantly rubbing it in our faces

the same is true for players in other sports like Tom Brady or Kobe Bryant, etc

Ovechkin is basically on the same talent level, if not better, and far more mature.

Crosby is a little crying bitch.

Well uberchickens record in big games is pretty awesome. Other than losing in multiple game sevens, never making it to the stanley cup, or even the gold medal game.

I can see how he's better.......

Ovechkin also doesn't have Evgeni Malkin on his team.

Do you even watch him play?? I respect his game, super talented, but he's a snotty little prima-dona beeotch on the ice. He's always complaining about not getting calls, he instigates then retreats more than any other skilled player I've seen, and then whenever he's actually called for a penalty he more then not acts like he didn't do a thing. And yes I'm the biggest Flyers fan I know so I'm a little biased against him but as I explained I've seen him play plenty of times and can justify the hate.

There are many more Ovechkin fans that are not Caps fans than Crosby fans that are not Pens fans. At least in this country, probably different in Canada.

I love Crosby, he's a hell of a lot better than Ovenchicken.

People like you is why I tend to hate everyone on Pittsburgh...

but I'll tell you what, since you want to compare Crosby to Ovechkin lets see how it pans out (my response on a different board)

go research the INDIVIDUAL achievements...

personal hardware OV wins hands down (doesn't include this years yet since we don't know mvps and such):
Calder (Rookie of the year): OV 1 Crosby 0
MVP: OV 2 (back to back) Crosby 1
Pearson (NHLPA MVP, back to back): OV 2 Crosby 1
Rocket Richard (Goals): OV 2 Crosby 0
Art Ross (Points): OV 1 Crosby 1

Regular Season excluding playoffs:
Ovechkin WSH 396 (games) 269 (goals) 260 (assists) 529 (points) = 1.33avg
Crosby PIT 371 (games) 183 (goals) 323 (assists) 506 (points) = 1.36avg

Playoffs:
Ovechkin WSH 28 (games) 20 (goals) 20 (assists) 40 (points) = 1.42avg
Crosby PIT 62 (games) 30 (goals) 52 (assists) 82 (points) = 1.32avg

They are damn close overall... neither is way ahead of the other unless you are comparing assists and goals

Now the washington capitals have some catching up to do against the penguins... you know since it's a TEAM game... same goes w/ Russia and Canada respectively

That's because people fall in love w/ his character on and off the ice

Crosby is a much quieter person overall (not saying this is a bad thing at all)

Because he is Canadian.

Everything that is wrong in the U.S. can and should be blamed on Canada. Everyone knows this.

Maybe. Personally though, Pavel Datsyuk is my favorite player, and he's pretty quiet...

Ovechkin likes to hit and has less of the qualities that BrokenVisage laid out so well. When he beat my Wings he was far from the best player on the ice for the Pens yet you have to get a little tired of the concerted effort that the league and the media have put into making him the next coming of Gretzky all since he was what, maybe 15 years old.

I actually dislike him less as he has matured.
