Question: Why are 1080p projectors so expensive?

?

I can understand that it is exclusive and new tech, but I wanted wanted to hear people's opions as to why they are no high right now.

For the most part the cheapest ones are $9000

Is it simply that people are willing to pay that amount fo them?

1080p is pretty new. the vast majority of high def TVs dont have it either. your gonna have to pay a premium if you want it now.

I got one for watching my Vikings play in 92" HDTV goodness. No other reason is needed.😛

Until you have seen the good ones in action, you would think projectors suck 😛

Chipset, miniaturized electronics, more expensive and brighter lamp, better managed thermals and likely superior frontend processing all play a part.

But mostly the price difference is due to the extremely low volume on 1080p projectors.

Sh!t, I am still waiting for 720p projectors to drop in price. Sure, I can get a 480p PJ for under $1000...but what about true HD?

i know you can buy rear projection 1080p's for a lot less than 9000
search on costco.com i have seen them for $3k
also i think they had the 45" Sharp LCD Aquos 1080p for $4800

Projectors as in stand-alone projectors, not rear projections...
Duh...

Really? I don't consider 2,000 dollars to be cheap..but hey, maybe you make a lot of money. Thats cool.

You can get a decent 720p FP for ~$1K. [edit]heh - maybe not. The Sanyo Z3 isn't too far off at ~$1300.[/edit]

Goosemaster, if you're seriously in the market for a FP, I would recommend getting a 720p for now, then when the price drops on the 1080p in a couple of years, upgrade then. There's not that much 1080p content now anyway - it would be like paying $7K for an HDTV 5 years ago.

Ding ding ding!

Just give it a couple years. 😉

(by the time I need to get a new bulb for the current one I might upgrade to 720p while the 1080p ones are getting reasonable)

If you want a used AE700U, be sure to pm me. I'll be upgrading to 1080p when it hits the 3k mark.

I'll have to see what kind of 720p DLP options there are 😉

I might give DLP a try myself. I don't see rainbows on the latest Samsumg models. Do they have a single color wheel?

I haven't been keeping up with anything really recent. Don't want to get the upgrade bug.
