Advertising is one particular subcomponent of marketing. Marketing is the entire process of getting your product to the consumer -- advertising is one component of that.

Advertising - explicit promotion of a product or service. It is about getting a consumer's attention, and encouraging their impulse to buy or contact you for further information.

Marketing - behind the scenes management of developing, packaging, and distributing a product or service based on consumer's expected reactions to product or service. It is about analyzing past and current trends and applying that to a target market.
