now.. what do you do when you have nothing to do or work on? i feel like i'm going to get fired if i'm not busy, or i'm not acting busy atleast, and sitting there surfing ATOT won't help :)

so what do you guys do?

Play PS2 or Gamecube..... not sure how this would go over where you work though.

i surf the net and chat online. Always keep a window open to a "tech" site, so you can alt+tab to it when the boss walks by.

oh, i just thought of one.

I would call random 1-800 numbers, but act like you are helping someone with their computer over the phone.

1) surf the web
2) learn something new (at least attempt to) related to my career path

If your production cannot be tracked and you have 'free' time, you should remember there is someone working to take away your job.

It might happen tomorrow. It may happen in two months or two years.

More and more companies are outsourcing your job. Wonder what the reason is?

I do not understand why some cry about being laid off or fired when they have the time to post on sites that have nothing to do with their job.

yeah i've been spending time looking at photoshop related sites and i was looking through php to see if there was anything useful i could impliment. i don't want to do 'spare' things like surf atot, i hate when they don't keep me busy, they actually hired me because it's cheaper to have someone inhouse then to keep bringing in the 90/h consultant every day for maybe a couple hours a day or more

I run a CNC machine. Most of the cutters run for at least 2 hours so while the machine runs I surf. :)

I crawl into forging presses often dodging drips of liquified grease as I grind Connecting Rod impressions upside-down using a mirror.

I know you people probably think I'm kidding about upside-down with a mirror, but it's the truth. People ask if I ever thought of becoming a dentist. I carry one of my wife's used up compacts with the powder removed everywhere I go. Forging presses are notorious for not opening up very wide.

Squisher,
Ever here of something we call "lock out, tag out"?

Humm... Would your handle reflect on your profession...Or your fate? (If you don't practice loto!)

I repair precision sand blasters and Laser cutting tools, as well as wafer coating, washing and inspection tools. Soon to start learning about Acid wet benchs.
