Question: WD1200JB

I just put together a new comp. 1800+ xp w/ gigabyte ga-7vrxp, 512mb pc2700 samsung ram, and a 120gb WD special edition HD. I'm running on windows XP pro and the most i could partition was 111GB. I was wondering if that was normal or is there some problem I don't know about? This is my first self-built comp so I'm going in cold turkey. Thanks

U might want to actually partition it into smaller sizes.

Your Hard drive actually only has ~111gb on it because actual HD capacity and the advertised capacity are different. My 60gb HD only actually has ~56gb on it or something, the difference is just more noticable on large HDs like the WD1200JB. Everything is fine although you may want to break the 111gb partition up into smaller ones.

XP also sees my 120 as 111GB..

western digital take GB's as 1,000,000,000 bytes. Anyone in the computer industry knows that a GB is 1073741824 bytes.

So 120,000,000,000 (120 Western digital GB) / 1073741824(real GB) = 111.758708953857421875 real GB

there you go.

As everyone stated, your 120GB is actually around 111GB. All my WD 120GB drives are recognized as 111GB as well. (In Windows 2000 and WindowsXP)

both of my 40gb drives come up as ~39 gb
