Do I accept?

Long story short - me accountant.

I do mostly balance sheet work, and this new roll will do more profit and loss related accruals.

Pro: New stuff, resume builder
Cons: More stupid work, same pay? (need to confirm this)

same boss, different boss? If different boss is he/she ok or an ass? The rest of the team you will work with? Having a good/bad boss & team can make or break a position. This is always my first concern (even over salary).

same/different hours?

You should take on new work if it helps you grow.
If you are not being challenged at work then eventually you'll end up stale.

This move would be the same boss, she is a very good boss.

take it. nothing like having a good boss. you will learn new things and add it to your performance review at the end of the year. these things do not go unnoticed.

Unless there's some reason to believe that there will be significantly more work, or the work will be significantly more challenging (obviously it will be at first) and you don't think you're up for it, I'd go for it.

Adding some more gas to the fire.

This roll that I was just offered was a Senior Roll. They have not been able to fill that roll for the past 4-5months now. Just yesterday they down graded the roll to my level which is regular accountant level. So it went from senior to non-senior.

Then, no. It's one thing to take a more senior role without pay raise, it's a whole other thing taking a down graded role. You will still get the same jobs from before the downgrade and you don't get the title nor compensation.

I, personally, would still pursue it but would attempt to negotiate the senior title. Should be a relatively easy case considering the circumstances.

Why did you not apply for the position when it was a Senior position and they were having trouble filling it?

I think you really need to take it. Gives you more experience and increases your chances for further promotions down the line.

If you don't take it then your Boss will see you as the guy that doesn't want to be challenged and one that does not want to grow and develop.

Then when the next promotion comes along why even offer it to you if you turned down previous opportunities in the past.

More experience + more opportunity = open doors down the road.

<---has had 4 different positions in 5 years. all were lateral promotions/promotions and opened doors + led to more $$$

As Controller with positions reporting to me from Accounting Supervisor to Accounting Coordinator, I have rarely, if ever, downgraded positions. In fact, I'm in the middle of a battle to upgrade positions.

You are getting screwed, but there probably isn't much you can do. Their argument is probably that the position never warranted being a senior accountant role, but they kept is in deference to the previous employee. Or they could be having a difficult time finding qualified applicants because the accounting market is pretty good right now. So, they are lowering requirements in order to widen the pool. It's not a bad idea to tell them to keep the title but pay a little more for larger responsibilities (using the previous title as evidence), but it may fall on deaf ears.

BTW, if you live in Houston, I have an opening for an experienced general ledger accountant :)

I'll speak to the situation I'm in.

I had a unique set of skills that were pertinent to this project. The open position was a manager position. I was not qualified in HR's eyes to get the position, but the manager in charge still wanted me (due to said unique skills). The position was open for like 2 months and they NEEDED someone.

So they downgraded the position and brought me on - it was still a promotion for me, just not as big of a promotion as I wanted (I basically jumped 1 rung on the ladder instead of 2). Still, it's been great experience and I'm hopeful I get that next bump soon. And if I don't get it within 1-2 years, I still got a lot of new stuff to put on my resume :)

Also - this is very spot on. Old employee was senior, so they are now looking for a senior. New roll can't be filled as a senior (no applicants) and now they downgraded it and handed it to me, when I've seen all the work associated to this roll and know i can perform them.

In the end. I will accept but i'll word smith something to make sure I either get compensated now or get compensated in a merit increase in July.

Still sux that it was senior meaning 10k more in pay to now a regular level accountant.
