what's considered a heavy wight for laptops?

[i changed the subject]

How would you rate the performance on a scale of 1-10? Does it choke horribly when you open 2 or 3+ applications such as microsoft word, powerpoint, cuteftp and such?

I have a notebook with the 1.6 GHz mobile Celeron processor. The processor can handle multiple applications with ease. Remember, most applications don't need a CPU beyond 400 or 500 MHz. Memory is more essential (in most cases) than just the CPU.

Hey! This isn't off topic! This is on topic! You should take this to CPU/Processors!

But seriously, even a wimpy processor could handle word, powerpoint, cuteftp and such simultaneously without breaking a sweat. Smoothly multitasking such unintensive programs depends more on having enough RAM than processor power. Try to get one with 512mb.

Heavy depends on useage and on the person. I gladly lug around 7+ pounds of ThinkPad because it's a small price for me to pay for the ThinkPad's legendary robustness, plus I use it in leu of a desktop. It's only 800MHz, but two and a half years ago when I got it, the thing was a speed demon. 800MHz and 256 MB RAM, and it handles everything I throw at it, so I think that just about any laptop today will be good. I've run 5-6 IE windows, Outlook, Word, Trillian and Winamp with Photoshop in the background and there wasn't much slowdown. If my old machine can handle that, I think you'll do fine with almost any new machine.

Wow. My 10 pound Inspiron 8200 is a monster. But I can have lots of IE windows, Photoshop, Trillian, various other programs running in the background with no slow down. Plus its great at playing RTCW and MOH when I get bored.
