Question to Illinois I-Pass users

I've got a car with temporary license plates and I need to commute to Chicago once a week. I would buy an I-pass but I don't know if I can do it for a car with temporary license plates, and I don't know what to do when I will get normal license plates.

Here's a question, my parents have an I-Pass which they don't use, can I borrow it and use it until I get normal license plates (at which point I'll buy my own I-Pass) or not?

Thanks.

PS official IL I-Pass website sucks. Horrible navigation and it doesn't answer any questions I have.

You should be able to use it without any issues. I've used my parent's and my wife's parents passes without any issues.

Well the reason I asked is because I know that when you buy I-Pass you need to give you license plate number and if you plan to use it on two vehicles you need to give both license plate numbers, doesn't it imply that each I-Pass is tied to a particular vehicle and cannot be used with another?

They just want the plate numbers for their records. It's not like they check every car that goes through to see if the plate matches the transmitter.

My sister-in-law bought another car and used her I-Pass in it without registering it. She received a notice and a $60 fine. The fine was dropped once she explained what happened, but it indicates that they will occasionally check plates against the license plate.

Why not simply add the car? It takes two minutes on their website.

Maybe if the IPASS doesn't trigger when going through the gate, they also check the license plate to see if a IPASS is registered with it. Maybe. That said, I've used IPASS with rental cars without any problem. One time the IPASS didn't register when crossing the gate, and when I received the fine I just called and told them I had an IPASS. They just charged me the $0.40.
