Question regarding x1950 pro agp

I'll be getting that ATI x1950 pro agp card when it comes out later this November. Something to hold me over until I overhaul my entire system. I have one concern though...

Since I'll be playing games like Fear, HL2 (which ran beautifully on my 5950 ultra), Dark Messiah and Oblivion (which ran horribly on my 5950 ultra, uninstalled), should I expect the card to be held back by my AMD Athlon XP 2700+ processor? How much of an impact will this have?

I can't OC because my ASUS A7V8X motherboard doesn't have a PCI bus lock. It's that old.

We are going to need a bottleneck thread for this AGP card. I dont think you can know what sort of bottleneck it will be untill the card comes out.

For me I am hoping it will save my P4 3.0ghz soc 478 chip system for six months.

I'm not expecting to play anything like oblivian or fear but I would like to play older games at higher resolutions.

I figure after this vid card I will go back to a Console again.

A64 3000+ vs. E6400 in FEAR 1280x960
A64 3000+ = 35fps
E6400 = 58fps

A64 3000+ vs. E6400 in COD2 1024x768
A64 3000+ = 84fps
E6400 = 166fps

On average then you should expect roughly 2x lower minimum framerates with 2700+ vs. top cpus. You will probably have to play at 1 resolution lower at least as a result. However, if you are on a budget, it still might be cost effective.

HL2 should run without problems though since it has an excellent game engine.

I agree this card will need its own review focusing on CPU bottlenecking.

My X800XTPE was bottlenecked in my XP-M @ 2.4ghz

this card will be for sure in your system with a XP2700+!

Those results are with a x1900xtx not a x1950pro!!
That means nothing.
I'm thinking you'll need a amd 64 at 2.4 or more or a pent 4 at 3.4 or more to utilize the x1950pro card. I'm bottlenecked now with the 7800gs and my cpu is at 3.35 but it is a 533 bus version.

The x800xt was already bottlenecked by the AXP, the x1950p would be even more so. You'll still get a HUGE improvement over a 5950ultra, but the cpu will not be fast enough to push the card to its full potential.

I was thinking about scoring a barton 3200+ off of ebay, a cheap temporary solution. Even with the Athlon XP's architecture with the 3200+ barton model, am I still to expect bottlenecking issues?

My guess would be yes. Given the cheap, sometimes comparable, price to the 7800gs, I think I'm still going to go for the x1950 pro. It'll satisfy me until I overhaul this entire system.

Older CPUs can be found real cheap right now but dont buy anything until the thing actualy comes out and we get some benchys.

What is a good video card match for a 2.5ghz Barton Socket A system?

Any X1950 owners out there that can post there expeiences with a high end socket A processor (barton @ ~2.5ghz)? Is the X1950 worth it over the 7600GT or will the Socket A processor bottleneck the X1950 too much?

Here is a new AGP review focused on the o/c'ed XFX 7600GT. Text

I just installed a Sapphire 512 card last night in my 2500 barton rig that oc'ed to 3000. It replace a 9800 pro. A few weeks ago i ran the first test of 3dmark with the 9800 and got 0-4 fps. "Mostly 0-2" I ran it last night and was getting 12-24fps. * I didn't fool with any card setting, that was straight out of the box with the drivers provided by Sapphire.

I ran this free benchmark program http://freestone-group.com/ and it scored 2214.

Please clarify:
You are saying that your 2500 barton (1.833 ghz) is oc'ed to 3ghz :Q or to a 3000 barton equivalent (2.167ghz)

Ill be replacing a 9800 too (pro) so I'm more intrested in your results.

Your system with a X1950Pro will be more than enough to enjoy Oblivion at good settings, even more so with F.E.A.R., the P4 3.0 is not too shabby AND games (especially first person games) rely more on the GPU than the CPU.

2700+ will bottleneck you severely. I was bottlenecked by my 2500+ barton on same board with my 6600GT.

What about if i have Pentium 3.2GH 800 MHZ fsb PRESCOT and second one
PENTIUM 3.4GH 800 MHZ PRESCOT too, will X1950PRO 512mb work on it without any
problem?

It will work fine, but setting any game at settings which require 512mb of textures will probably be a bit much for those Cpus. If the 256mb version is substantially cheaper, it's probably better to get it, and put the savings towards a future total system overhaul.
