Question regarding Windows XP OEM

I have heard accounts of people who bought OEM copies of windows xp home and after a while, they were promted to buy a registration key, and they HAD to, or else windows stopped working. Is this actual fact, or does it work regardless? Is this an OEM issue or is the retailer selling bootlegg copies?

What you've posted and what you've "heard" is fictional regarding XP Home.

No problems w/ my OEM XP Home. After some hardware updates I and reinstalls I've had to call MS for activation, but other than taking about 10 minutes on the phone, no problems.

No problems here. Took a couple minutes to activate this dell OEM key on my lappy but nothing serious.

Just wondering which street corner was handing out those rumors. I've never heard anything anytime anywhere about that kind of behavior from OEM versions of the OS. Congratulations! Your the first.
