Question regarding using my old computer as a gaming server.

Hi, I just purcahsed a new computer recently, and I got my 933 p3 laying around and I thought it would be fun to run it as a halflife server. Before I go out and purcahse a hub and all the stuff I'l need I was wondering if anyone can give me a rough estimate of how many people would be able to fit onto my server.

I'm running

Pentium 3 933 mhz
512 mbs of pc133 sdram
40 gig 7200rpm hd

Well, I believe that is all there is needed to know about the system to make a educated guess.

It will be run as a halflife - counterstrike server. I've been hearing numbers in the 16 range, for it to stay comftorable and just about enver hickup. It'll be running windows xp (should I use pro or home) and it will have just windwos xp and halflife installed (Will do a format and reinstall windows prior to running server).

I'm currently on rogers@home (aka shaw@home) in vancouver BC, my speeds are quite comftorable and usually in a game on a good server i'll get pings in the 60 range.

Hope that helps 🙂 thanks a ton for anyoen taht si willing to help, or anyone who just reads my post 🙂

Sure you can use it as a game server, but are we talking lan (as in lan party?) or internet? If internet, it has a lot more to do with your upload bandwidth then what processor you have. If your cable is cap'd around 128k up, you might host 2-3 with out lag, at 256k you might be able to host 5-6 without lag.

Like the other guy said, it depends more on your internet connection. We have ADSL giving 2Mbit down and 640kbit up and we were running an UT server on a P166 with only 128megs of ram with no problems, so make sure your connection is good and you shouldn't have a problem at all with that power machine.

There's usually a program for running a game server (there's a UT server program that you can dnload and run for free.. it just lets you generate maps and run bots on it but people playing on it have to have the full program with the maps).
