Question regarding US passport

My gf stated she wanted a passport but she's not a US citizens. However, she does have her green card but I told her it's not possible to obtain a passport w/o first obtaining a US citizenship. She stated that many ppl she knows went back to cambodia to visit and they used their "passports." I know damn well most of these ppl arent citizens. My question, how can they leave the US and was allowed to re-enter when they came back?

I think they have a green card, but I'm thinking maybe a Visa was used.

As long as u have a valid passport from some country and a valid greencard u shud be able to get in. Well atleast this is what I thought.

 
All you need is a VALID passport from ANY country and a green card. Then you can come and go as you please.

BINGO!!!! thats what I'm trying to figure out. She was born in Cambodia, but she doesnt have any docs to prove it. I mean, they didnt hand out things such as birth certificates and stuff like that.
