question regarding the iMac

Can I add an external monitor and have my screen "extended?"

Not cloned or spanned but extended so that I have a second "desktop" w/o the menu bars at the bottom spanning across both screens?

Yes, but you have to buy a $20 adapter.. MiniDVI -> DVI. It's the same one that you use with the Macbook, I believe.

It's a good thing you don't want it spanned because as far as I know, you can't even do that in OS X.

I have always wondered why people wanted this? I guess it's good for someone who needs a lot of wide open space, maybe video/audio editors? But I've always preferred separate display areas.
