Question regarding the Anandtech Patriot 1066 Review

My question is in regard to the recent Anandtech review. One of the DDR2 memory they tested it against was the 2 x 1GB Corsair CM2X1024-6400C3. This is DDR2-800 memory, yet it often got better results than the Patriot 1066. Is there something I'm missing about this? I didn't think you could overclock DDR2-800 that high. If the results are true, then I'm better off saving a hundred bucks or so and buying the Corsair.

Cas 3 is the hardest for DDR2 memory to hit. That memory is rated to 2.4 volts. By raising the timings that memory is able to hit 1100 mhz to 1200 mhz with ease. It is the second highest binned Micron D9GMH that Corsiar offers with only the Dominator 8888C4 being higher.

A decent amount of the higher-end DDR2 800 stuff will overclock to 1000 and above. Most of them hit their cap somewhere around 1000-1050ish, whereas the higher end DDR2 1000 or 1066 can often hit 1100+. Many of the prices for premium DDR2 800 aren't far off from the DDR2 1000 and above prices though.

So I would think the Corsair memory would be the obvious choice. Does it need additional heatsinks to reach those speeds reliably?

Memory overheating usually isn't a HUGE problem, though it's something to consider. If your case doesn't have adequate cooling (I.E., you went the silent route and removed most / all of your case fans), you should consider rigging up a fan to blow on / near the memory. However, you're more likely to have problems with CPU or northbridge heat before anything else.

I appreciate the feedback. I'm trying to decide whether to go DDR-800 or higher for the upcoming 680i chipset.

I don't yet get to play with the secret stuff (like the 680i reference MOBOs) but, rumor has it that the 680i is going to clock like a beast. We can only hope so after the 570 and 590 for Intel disappointments. If it does, I'd suggest the fastest Dominator that your budget will allow.
