I was reading an interview of NFL2k5, and in some of the answers they use brackets.

PE: If we didn?t have the quality of the product, and we didn?t have the support of all the editors writing about the product, I probably would be. In this industry, since a lot of [success] is driven by word of mouth--which comes from magazines and the Web sites--and [since] the product stands on its own, no, we?re not worried.

What are the brackets supposed to mean, and why are they there?

Thanks.

the person didn't actually say "success", but maybe they were talking about success and the person said "since a lot of it is driven by word of mouth". Since people wouldn't know what "it" was, the mag changes the word to "success" and brackets it to indicate they changed the actual word in order to make more sense of it.
