Question regarding LCD resolutions

So i was looking for new monitor as my current one was too old and i couldnt notice how desktop LCD's have much lesser resolution than laptop LCD's

For example:
A usual widescreen 17 inch notebook display like Dell E1705 has max resolution of 1920x1200, while only being only a17 inch display
A usual widescreen 20 inch monitor has maximum resolution of 1680x1050, while being a 20 inch display.

So i dont get it.
How can a 17 inch laptop monitor display up to 1920x1200 resolution, while the only way to have such a huge resolution on a desktop monitor, you would need at least 23 inch monitor.

How can 17 inch laptop display do the same job as 23 inch desktop display?

It's simply a higher density of pixels. Manufacturers expect desktop monitors to be farther away from the user, and thus the resolutions are lower than their laptop counterparts.

Yeah, I don't think there's any reason they couldn't do it if they wanted to. Why hasn't anyone made one yet? I dunno.

Maybe they're out there and we don't know about them either :Q

just like shoegazer said, probably because of the distance once sits from a desktop vs a laptop. on my 17" lcd @ 1280x1024 i sit about 3'+ away from it and there is no way i could go higher and still read it. my laptop has a 14" lcd with 1024x768 and it is usually 1' away, at most 2' and that would be pushing it.

unless you put a 17" @ 1920x1200 on your desktop about 1' away i doubt many could read it.

obviously it can be done, but i doubt anybody would by one. most desks are 3' or deeper and most people put the display at the back of the desk, so i guess that is why you don't see them.
