Hi

guys Im a bit concerned about the increase in pings and port scans I get lately
in a day it will go over 500, Im currently using zone alarm and it cant keep up
funny thing is that it started a couple months ago, it didnt used to be like this, and that concerns me even more
by the way Im on Comcast cable

now Im thinking about getting a 3com cable/dsl gateway that has some integrated security features
http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10341198&loc=101

would it help ? or should I consider an actual firewal ?

please let me know what you guys think

Thank you
Dan

ZoneAlarm is making you paranoid - its way to report happy, port scans and pings are nothing to worry about and shouldn't be relayed onto the end user. Saying that, I would recommend using a router to any DSL user.

yeah, this kind of stuff is just "background noise" on the internet. With the blaster and nachi worms out there lots of pings, portscans and calls on port 135 are the norm.

I know its mostly noise, but what troubles me the most is the sudden increase from 100-200 a day to over 500 (probably its much more but zonealarm can only keep up with the last 500)

If you're on a cable modem, somebody on your subnet probably got infected with Blaster or some similar bug. If it's an IP on your subnet, report it to your ISP and they should be able to inform the customer of the problem.
